UNY was established in 1964 as a merger of 2 educational institutions in Yogyakarta, namely the Faculty of Pedagogy of Gadjah Mada University and the Teacher Education Institute. Initially, the University registered under the name of Institut Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan Yogyakarta (IKIP Yogyakarta). The name Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta officially established in 1999.
